STEINERT HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND
Under the direction of Michael Anzuini, with assistance from David Pollack, Steinert's Jazz Band and Spartan Jazz are two of several performance groups at Steinert High School. The primary focus of these two ensembles is the study of various forms of jazz literature, jazz education, jazz improvisation, and jazz theory. In addition, all students maintain membership within a music department ensemble.
The Jazz Band is directed by the leadership of Mike Anzuini and meets twice weekly for two hours per evening from November through April. Spartan Jazz, an ensemble under the leadership of Dave Pollack, also meets twice weekly for two hours. It is during these sessions that a thorough study of competitive literature, jazz education, improvisation, and basic jazz charts are performed by the students.
The Jazz Band carries a full complement of a modern "Big Band" with 5 saxophones, 5 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a complete rhythm section. Additional instrumentation is used to enhance the sound of occasional musical numbers. Acceptance into the Jazz Band is by audition.
The Jazz Band maintains an excellent reptuation as a quality ensemble. In recent years, the band has received many individual and ensemble awards at local, state, and regional Jazz Festivals. These awards include:
* Honorable Mention (4th Place), Class I, at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival.
* 2nd Place, Division II, NJIAJE State Festival.
* Division Champion, Cavalcade of Bands.
